The Department of Translation Theory and Practice has a 20-year history since our formation in 2002. The department provides high-quality teaching in the program "Translation (the English language major)" and also gives training for students in other educational programs (minor and elective courses).

Students that complete our bachelor’s degree requirements receive the following qualification: Bachelor of Philology. Translator of the English and German / French languages.

Students that complete our master’s degree requirements receive the qualification: Master of Philology. Translator of the English and German / French languages.

The main objective of our department is the application of the modern educational approaches to provide students with the key skills and abilities that are necessary for a modern creative highly qualified translator. The department aims to give our graduates knowledge and competences that meet all needs, standards and demands of the information age, as well as ensure effective intercultural communication. Our courses provide rich and fulfilling knowledge in a range of translation fields that help students build proficiency and qualities that guarantee their professional levels in the workplace.

The faculty members improve their professional level undergoing international internships and becoming members of the international professional associations: the International English Language Teachers Association (TESOL), the Association of the Germanic Languages Studies. Our lecturers are invited as heads and members of the competition boards at local and regional English language olympiads and as heads of examination boards to the other Ukrainian universities.

Our scholars yearly have numerous scientific articles and abstracts of their reports published, especially in numerous journals indexed in the largest worldwide citation databases; actively participate in international scientific conferences held in Ukraine and abroad, carry out peer reviews of theses. The Department of Translation is multilingual: lecturers teach English, German, French, Polish and Latin. All faculty members practice different types of translation.

The professors of the Department of Translation Theory and Practice are working in collaboration with students on two research themes:

• Translation in the polyparadigmatic space of linguistics
• Discursive and cognitive space of the world languages

Every two years, the department hosts the All-Ukrainian scientific conference with international participants "Topical Problems of Modern Translation Studies".

 The syllabi of the curriculum are based on the fundamental disciplines which, combined with comprehensive practical training, make it possible to train highly qualified professionals. Our professors help students achieve academic excellence in a diverse range of disciplines teaching theoretical disciplines and special courses in the theory and practice of translation, conduct practical classes in the specialty, supervise students' researches (bachelor and master theses), as well as translation and research internships.

Doctor of Philology, Professor Olena Selivanova is the author of 14 books: monographs, textbooks, and the first single-authored linguistic encyclopedia in Ukraine. Since 1999, she has been the founder and head of a scientific linguistic school focused on cognitive and communicative-discursive studies. Olena Selivanova supervised 13 successfully defended dissertations in 4 linguistic specialities: Ukrainian, Germanic, French and Russian languages.

Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Valerii Kykot is a translator, translation scholar, member of the National Union of Writers and the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the International Forum of Writers and Translators in Poland, and a participant in national and international scientific conferences on translation studies.

Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Oksana Pietsukh is the author of the parliamentary discourse analysis and has more than 100 scientific works on discourse studies, political linguistics, cognitive linguistics, communication theory, translation studies, terminology, semantic syntax, ethnolinguistics, cultural and genre studies.

Associate Professors Valery Kykot, Oksana Pjetsukh, and Iryna Lytvyn regularly publish monographs, textbooks, teaching and learning guides. Faculty members actively provide professional translations in different fields.

The Department of Translation Theory and Practice is a team of active, highly motivated undergraduate students and creative, innovative postgraduate students. Our students participate in various international conferences on interpreting and translation studies. The department supports international student mobility and our students deepen their knowledge and have intercultural exchange possibilities participating in summer schools in the Polish cities, student exchange programs in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and the United States.
