Modern Institute Profile

The Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages is one of the largest structural subdivisions of the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy, with significant scientific achievements, rich intellectual heritage, long-standing traditions, and a history dating back to the first third of the 20th century.

Currently, the director of the Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages is Associate Professor Lyudmyla Shvydka, Associate Professor Lyudmyla Rudakova is in charge of educational and organizational work, Associate Professor Larysa Kornovenko is in charge of research work and international relations, and Lyudmyla Kalyuzhna is in charge of national and patriotic education, and Tetiana Kostiuk is a part-time study coordinator.

Today the Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages encompasses six departments: the department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English (head of the department: Larysa Pashis, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor), the department of German Philology (head of the department: Lesia Ovsiienko, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor), the department of Modern English Teaching Practices (acting head of the department: Nataliia Slyvka, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor), the department of Slavic Philology, Foreign Literature and Methods of Teaching (acting head of the department: Larysa Kornovenko, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor), the department of Translation Theory and Practice (acting head of the department: Iryna Lytvyn, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor), the department of Foreign Languages (head of the department: Iryna Kulish, PhD in Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor).

The Scientific Educational Institute of Foreign Languages provides full-time study and part-time study of undergraduate and graduate students offering such curricula: Language and Literature (English, German), Language and Literature (English), Language and Literature (German, English), Foreign Literature and English, Translation (the English Language Major), Polish Language. Translation and Cross-cultural Communication.

The Institute highly expands the international cooperation and activities, as such international contacts build a strong basis that would guarantee modern professionals’ development and promote academic excellence. International cooperation has following focuses: participation in international educational projects and programs, the Fulbright Academic Exchange Programs, the training cooperation program with the Goethe Institute, the DAAD service in Ukraine, the German international parliamentary scholarship, scholarship programs provided by the Slovak Republic, the Free State of Bavaria, the US government, the international Visegrad  Fund, as well as the Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship, the Edmund  S. Muskie’s Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship etc.; cooperation with the foreign educational institutions which is based on the concluded agreements; organization and holding of international conferences and seminars; participation in international scholarship and grant programs; cooperation with international cultural, educational and scientific institutions. The Institute of Foreign Languages cooperates with many universities of the world within its framework of inter-institutional partnership agreements.

Currently our faculty members coordinate and participate in the Erasmus+ projects "Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine's Multilingual Education and European Integration" (MultiEd), ICM KA107 Erasmus + (in cooperation with the University of Valladolid).

Scientists of the Institute take part in the international, all-Ukrainian and inter-university conferences. Foreign specialists are involved in teaching foreign languages at the institute.

The Institute actively promotes the research work and facilitates the involvement of students into various scientific projects. Academic research makes valuable contribution to improving the quality of training highly qualified professionals. The students become members of the scientific society, science clubs, discussion groups focused on cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, onomasiology, translation studies, communication theory, historical poetics, etc. Students take an active part in international and all-Ukrainian scientific conferences of young researchers and in various academic olympiads. The Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages annually celebrates Science Week, Foreign Language Week, International Translation Day, Cyril and Methodius Day, thematic literary evenings, festivals and institute days.

Mentoring plays an important part in the educational process contributing to the continuous guidance and support in students’ life, as well as constant students’ personality, abilities and potential opportunities formation and development. Along with this, the Institute has a well-developed system of the student government.

The Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages conducts a large amount of work on its development and modernization, but the prerogative of the Institute has always been and remains the quality professional training of highly qualified specialists. The modern chronicle of the Institute focuses on the elaboration of a strategy for its further development, the establishment of its strong position, and the maintenance of its professional image.

The Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages aims to train specialists whose knowledge and skills would allow them to successfully compete in the labor market not only in Ukraine but also abroad, and whose qualifications and diplomas would have worldwide recognition.
