History of the Department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English goes back to 1986, and in 2021 the department celebrated its 35th anniversary.
Our department is the final stage of students’ professional training and its work is mainly focused on providing graduates with knowledge and skills that guarantee them a successful career in the highly competitive professional world. Our main objective is to nurture specialists who are ready to extend their professional horizons, navigate through a variety of modern trends in the professional field and create these trends on their own.
The department offers training at two levels:Specialities and Educational Programmes for Bachelor's Degree:

- 035 Philology (035.041 Germanic languages and literatures (including translation), primary – English), Language and Literature (English, German).

Our everyday work is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and skills, which meet the requirements of the information society. In particular, we take a good deal of effort to enhance their communicative and cognitive skills, boost their systematic scientific thinking, develop their professional flexibility and readiness to face various challenges on the career path. Our degree programs equip students with modern professional skills of international communication, giving them the opportunity to understand and navigate through socioeconomic conditions of development of the globalized world.
Applying new approaches to learning input, the professors of the department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English help students achieve academic excellence in a diverse range of pedagogical and linguistic disciplines. Moreover, we provide students with guidance and assistance in their research (course and qualification papers) and consult them during their Philology practice and teaching practicum at school. The department lecturers also teach English for professional purpose to students whose major is “International Relations, Social Communications and Regional Studies" at Educational Scientific Institute of International Relations, History and Philosophy.
The lecturers of the department are constantly invited as Heads and members of the Competition Boards at local and regional English language Olympiads and as Heads of Examination Boards to different Ukrainian universities. Additionally, the scholars constantly do their own research and publish results in scientific journals, including those indexed in the largest worldwide citation databases; participate in international conferences and educational programs administered by the American Councils in Ukraine and IREX; carry out peer reviews of theses; have internships at Ukrainian scientific and educational institutions and abroad and provide assistance to students who submit applications for study abroad programs.
We are honored to have Doctor of Philology, professor Svitlana Zhabotynska and Doctor of Pedagogy, professor Olena Vovk working in our department.
Professor Svitlana Zhabotynska is one of the most outstanding Ukrainian linguists, who has made a tremendous contribution to the development of Ukrainian school of cognitive linguistics, publishing more than 190 scholarly papers in the field. The professor is the author of Semantics of Lingual Networks, a conception that develops methodology of structuring linguistic and-non-linguistic information. To share her profound knowledge and experience and engage the colleagues and students of the department in doing innovative linguistic research, professor Svitlana Zhabotynska has established the research laboratory of cognitive-discursive studies, which is focused on the implementation of new, cognitively-oriented methods of teaching foreign languages to students of linguistic and non-linguistic majors at the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University. Her present research is in the field of cognitive political linguistics. Professor Svitlana Zhabotynska is constantly invited to Ukrainian universities and leading research institutions abroad to give lectures and workshops.
Professor Olena Vovk focuses on communicative and cognitive competence of philology students in the light of the new paradigm of modern education. The scholar is the author of numerous scholarly publications and training methodical manuals on methods of teaching English and workbooks on academic writing. Nowadays, the scholar’s interest is concentrated on CLIL-methodology and Neuropedagogy as innovative trends of teaching English.
Doctor of Philology, professor Svitlana Zhabotynska and Doctor of Pedagogy, professor Olena Vovk successfully supervise students’ postgraduate scientific activities.
Lecturers, postgraduate students and students of the department continue their research of challenging issues of modern linguistics and work on the current research theme "Training of students future FL teachers for effective professional activity at secondary education institutions in the globalized world."
The department faculty are actively involved in international scientific activities, they develop relations with other educational and scientific institutions of Ukraine and abroad. Associate professor of the department Yulia Shuba coordinates the international project the Erasmus+ "Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine's Multilingual Education and European Integration" (MultiEd), in which Svitlana Zhabotynska, Olena Vovk, Viktoriya Tokarchuk, Svitlana Levochkina, Oksana Zaikovska and Larisa Pashis participate.
