Faculty Research Interests

 

Svitlana Zhabotynska is Doctor of Philology (Linguistics), Professor in the department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English. Since 1990 she has been doing research in the field of cognitive linguistics that studies the nature of interaction between language and the mind. Professor S. Zhabotynska is the author of Semantics of Lingual Networks, a conception that develops methodology for structuring linguistic and non-linguistic information, and has over 200 scholarly publications in the fields of cognitive linguistics, semiotics, political linguistics, linguistic semantics, lexicography, language teaching and processing educational information, neurocognitive foundations of bilingualism. She is the research advisor of 15 defended PhD and Doctor of Sciences / Linguistics (habilitation) dissertations. To share her profound knowledge and experience and engage the colleagues and students in providing innovative linguistic research, professor Svitlana Zhabotynska has established the cognitive and discourse studies research laboratory which focuses on  the modern theoretical and applied researches in the field of cognitive linguistics and discourse studies. Of late, the sphere of her particular interest has been political linguistics, especially the use of language as a weapon in the information war, and construal of images in political narratives.

Olena Vovk is Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor in the department of English Philology and Methods of Teaching English. Her research focuses on communicative and cognitive competence of philology students in the light of the new paradigm of modern education. She is the author of numerous scholarly publications and manuals on methods of teaching English and workbooks on academic writing. Nowadays, the scholar’s interest is concentrated on CLIL-methodology and Neuropedagogy as innovative trends of teaching English.

Olena Selivanova is Doctor of Philology (Linguistics), Professor in the department of Translation Theory and Practice. She is the author of 14 books: monographs, textbooks, and the first single-authored linguistic encyclopedia in Ukraine. Since 1999 the scholar has been the founder and head of a scientific linguistic school uniting cognitive and communicative discourse studies. Olena Selivanova is the research advisor of 13 successfully defended dissertations in 4 linguistic specialities: Ukrainian, Germanic, French and Russian languages.

Oksana Pietsukh is Doctor of Philology (Linguistics), Associate Professor in the department of Translation Theory and Practice. She is the author of the parliamentary discourse analysis, a conception that enables genre, interactional and conceptual modelling of the parliamentary debates. Her 115 scholarly publications are in the fields of discourse studies, political linguistics, cognitive linguistics, communication theory, translation studies, terminology, argumentation theory, semantic syntax, ethnolinguistics, cultural and genre studies, as well as political science.

Valerii Kykot is Doctor of Philology (Translation), Associate Professor in the department of Translation Theory and Practice. He is a translator, translation scholar, member of the National Union of Writers and the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the International Forum of Writers and Translators in Poland, and a participant in national and international scientific conferences on translation studies.

Serhii Danyliuk is Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor in the department of Foreign Languages. His research concentrates on structural and functional features of e-texts collected from various Internet resources, the usage of information and communicative technologies in the process of future specialists’ professional competence formation.

Oleksandr Kychenko is Doctor of Philology (Literature Studies), Professor in the department of Slavic Languages, Foreign Literature and Methods of Teaching with expertise in history and theory of folklore, theory of literature, and issues in modern semiotics.

Cognitive and Discourse Studies Research Laboratory

The research laboratory for cognitive and discourse studies focuses on the modern theoretical and applied researches in the field of cognitive linguistics and discourse studies. Cognitive studies of linguistic phenomena represented in different languages aim to establish the nature of interaction between language / speech structures and mind patterns, and operations. The reproduced conceptual models form the basis of language and speech providing the methodology for linguistic data analysis. These models enable the development of the applied approaches to the implication of the obtained findings. Discourse studies of multifaceted communicative situations deal with reconstructing and interpreting the regularities and components in the structures of the monolingual and multilingual communication processes.

Research activities: theory and methods in cognitive and discourse studies of language and speech; application of conceptual models as multidimensional structures in compiling the educational bilingual construction-combinatory thesaurus dictionaries focused on various conceptual thematic fields; a new method of teaching foreign languages based on neurocognitive principles, i.e. natural features of human thinking / brain; political linguistics concentrated on political discourse and the influence of the political language on collective consciousness.

 

Polonium Center

Director of the center: Liliia Potapenko, PhD in Philology (Linguistics)

 

The aim of the Polonium center is to expand the sociocultural, scientific, educational and diplomatic Ukrainian-Polish ties. The annual involvement of the representatives of the Polish Ministry of education in teaching the Polish language at the Institute highly contributes to improving the level of the professional Polish language teaching. The Polonium center serves as a methodological basis for high-quality professional training of translation students majoring in the Polish language. The enthusiasm of the lecturers, the involvement of the modern technical and resource equipment, rich library fund, video library, as well as intensive intercultural contacts develop cultural awareness in the Polish language teaching. The most successful graduates of the Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages continue their postgraduate studies at the Polish universities. The activities of the Polonium center are closely connected with the activities of the Polish diaspora. The Ambassador of Poland, the consul general, members of public, educational and cultural organizations take an active part in the development of the Polonium center.
